Introducing “true:shift” – Can You Meet the Challenge?

Tuesday, December 16, 2008 - Comments 8

Here we are at the end of another year. For me and my cohort Travis, this past year has largely been about working together to create this campaign, and then trying to figure out how to make it as effective as possible. It’s been great hearing from so many of you who have been positively impacted by it, and we’re excited about the future, which hopefully includes plugging more of you into our work here.

One of the most interesting things to us has been the fact that if we could take all the money we spend on “outside appearance” stuff like diets, fashion, cosmetics, etc. - about $80 billion annually - we could actually wipe out worldwide hunger. We talked about this in our I have eating issues video, and invariably when we play it for people, there is an audible gasp at this point in the video.

Since shooting that video, we’ve talked about coming up with a way to actually do something about it. Then Travis reconnected with Ben Homan, a friend from his seminary days who now just happens to be the president of Food for the Hungry. Ben also just happens to be a guy who “gets” the impact that eating issues can have within our own culture, and has personally gotten involved in helping us do something about it. Don’t you love how God works?

And so it is with great joy that I share with you the official launch of true:shift, a program to challenge each of us to “shift” our thinking, our resources, and even our culture in a tangible, practical way – away from investing so much on our outside appearance, and toward efforts that can truly heal hunger on the inside, for our sisters all over the world.

Participating in the challenge means choosing to “shift” about $32 bucks a month from something appearance oriented, toward feeding a hungry child. With each sponsorship received, Food for the Hungry will make a small donation back into our work at True, to help us continue our efforts of addressing a different kind of hunger here in the US. As a bonus, you’ll be able to begin telling a story of what it means to you to intentionally buck the appearance-oriented culture we live in and invest in another one. In fact, we invite you to send us those stories, and we’ll create a space here on the site to post them. Won’t it be cool to see what God does?

As you’re considering this, I want to emphasize something: it’s not a guilt thing. You’re not wrong for wanting to look good. We’re not “bad” for spending money on clothing, makeup, or products to help us be healthier (provided they actually do that). But let’s be honest – lots of what we spend our money on doesn’t even matter to us in a month or two. And it certainly doesn’t seem to make us much happier.

Isn’t it time to invest in something that will?

I hope you’ll take the challenge. Together we can look forward to tangible change in this new year, one step at a time…

Constance

PS. In case you’re wondering, yes, I’ve already signed up. Was the first one, actually! I’ll be blogging about it soon, and can’t wait to hear your stories too.

Thank you for putting this together you guys!  There is so much more blessing in putting your money where it counts rather than on our face and our body. It is hard to believe that $32 dollars a month can CHANGE a childs life, but the reality is that it can and it will.  After reading the above information I will be a bit more convicted when I go to the make-up counter for mascara.  I will have to take a moment to think, “feed a child for a week, or have pretty lashes...” Ouch.

Thanks again…

Constance,

Thank you so much for your post and for launching this important initiative.

We are living paycheck to paycheck, but I will be spending time in prayer and with my checkbook, seeing where I can cut corners so that I could sponsor a child.

God bless you.

Nobody can say you are all talk and no action.  This is awesome!  I love what you wrote, let’s shift, “away from investing so much on our outside appearance, and toward efforts that can truly heal hunger on the inside”.  Wow! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I wanted to share a quick story with everyone.  After reading this blog, I clicked on the link “sponsor a child now” which directs you to the “feed the hungry” web site.  On that site, they have pictures of hundreds of children that are in need of your help.  It’s really overwhelming.  The point is to allow you to pick a child’s family to sponsor.  So I called my two year old over and pulled her up on my lap so that she could choose a child.  I said, “Ashlyn, these kids are hungry.  Do you think we should send them some food?” She, of course said, “Yes.”.  I said, “Ok, let’s pick someone.” and I began scrolling through the multiple pictures saying, “do you see someone you’d like to send food to?” She didn’t say anything and I thought she was really trying to look hard for that specific child that looked like one of her friends or something.  Finally I said, “Ashlyn, we need to pick someone. Who do you think we should pick?” She looked at me with this confused look and said, “Mommy, every one.” Man, how do you respond to that one?  I didn’t even know my two year old could say “every one”.

My children and I just signed up to sponsor Safi, a 7 year-old girl living in El Gade, Kenya. It is so difficult to just choose one but we feel very blessed to have the resources to help someone who really needs it. My son also said we should help them all. I wish we could but for now we look forward to Safi not only getting the food and resources she needs, but also learning to realize she is a cherished and loved child of God. We are also excited to be a part of changing our culture by learning to sacrifice some of our “wants” and provide for the “needs” of another.

As someone who is a woman and has lived in the US all her life, I know what it’s like to deal with body image problems and food issues.  The idea that we spend so much money to try and make ourselves looks better in order to feel better… is bollocks!  It takes one person at a time, one day at a time, with faith in God, to change the world and make it a better place - to change the way we think in this society.

What better way to change the world and invigorate others than to sponsor a young woman in Kenya who desperately needs our support and needs to know she is loved and valuable just as she is.  While we often think we are so different from the young women and men overseas in Africa, the truth is that we’re not.  They have the same needs, wants, feelings, fears and issues that we do.  Young women, and men, there need to know that they are beautiful and loved just as much as young women and men do here in the States.

Thank you for providing True:Shift to give me and others like myself who have struggled with the world’s expectations, a way to give back to others like myself and to love people in such an easy way.

Much love!
